THE MADISON POLICE DEPARTMENT NOW HAS A VIABLE AND LESS LETHAL OPTION AT THEIR DISPOSAL — TO RESOLVE A DANGEROUS SITUATION.. THE DEPARTMENT HAS ACQUIRED 40 MILLIMETER LESS LETHAL LAUNCHERS. AS DAVE DELOZIER TELLS US – A MADISON MAN IS ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE OF IT. we don’t want them to that this as an all or nothing proposition. IT IS SOMETHING THEY TRAIN FOR – AS A LAST RESORT. THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE IS USED IF A SUBJECT IS ARMED WITH A DEADLY WEAPON – AN IMMINENT THREAT AND DEESCALATION EFFORTS FAIL. BUT WHEN POSSIBLE – LESS LETHAL OPTIONS ARE THERE. ((( , ” tazer, tazer, tazer. down on the ground, don’t move, don’t move. “))) IN A SEVEN TO FIFTEEN FOOT RANGE THE TAZER THAT EVERY OFFICER CARRIES IS AN OPTION. FROM AS FAR AS 75 FEET AWAY A SHOTGUN THAT FIRES A BEAN BAG CAN BE USED. ((( , ” they all have there own time and place. “))) AND NOW – FROM AS FAR AWAY AS 120 FEET – M-P-D CAN USE THIS 40 MILLIMETER LAUNCHER. IT FIRES A SPONGE TIPPED ROUND AT FORTY MILES PER HOUR. LESS THAN LETHAL – AND A MADISON MAN IS ALIVE TODAY BECAUSE OF IT. ((( , “initially the call came in with a young man literally cutting his neck on social media. “))) he has a knife in his hand, he just left the apartment. the officer was able to gt the time that he needed to get the 40 mm launcher on scene and then once it was on scene from about 100 feet away he deployed the round striking the subject in the abdomen. not only did it disable him to the point where the knife was dropped, but the officer could render aid and put on the clotting patch that saved his life, ultimately stopped him from bleeding out. THE GOAL IN ALL SITUATIONS FOR OFFICERS IS TO CREATE TIME AND SPACE – AND DEVELOP LINES OF COMMUNICATIONS WITH A SUBJECT. ((( , ” time and space bring us options. so the longer we have, the more time we have, the more options we can bring to us. “))) BECAUSE THEY COST 1400 DOLLARS EACH – M-P-D HAS TWO LAUNCHERS IN EACH DISTRICT. THEY REPRESENT – IN THE RIGHT SITUATION – AN OPTION TO WHAT NO OFFICER WANTS TO DO. our goal is to reduce the amount of times that we would possibly have to do that, and by the use of the time at a further distance it would give us more options leading up to the deployment of deadly force. IN MADISON, THIS IS DAVE DELOZIER, WISC, NEWS 3. THE LESS LETHAL OPTION DOESN’T REMOVE THE USE OF DEADLY FORCE AS A LAST OPTION. IF A SUBJECT IS ARMED WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND POSES AN IMMINENT THREAT – DEADLY FORCE IS STILL AN OPTION.
