After an elderly northern white rhino died
at San Diego Zoo on Sunday, the species is now even closer to extinction with only five
of them left in the world. Named Angalifu, the 44-year old male rhino
died of old age after being under veterinary care for a variety of age-related conditions. His death leaves only 5 northern white rhinos
left worldwide, one elderly female at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, one at a zoo in
Czechoslovakia, and three in Africa. Northern white rhinos have been brought to
the brink of extinction due to poaching. The few that have been preserved at zoos have
been largely non-reproductive. In the wild, rhinos are killed for their horns.
Some cultures believe rhino horn has medicinal value and according to San Diego Zoo, the
black-market in them continues to thrive.
