The Mashatu Matabole Hide is located in Mashatu Game Reserve. Mashatu is known worldwide among photographers because of the high photographic ‘hit rate’ in both the dry and the wet season A container has been processed and buried directly next to a waterhole, so that you can look at the animals at ground level and of course take photographs. Normally you take pictures from an open vehicle that takes you to the animals. Once you have spotted an animal, the driver tries to get as close as possible to the animal for a photo. There you are always dependent on the terrain and the light. The animals come to you at the Mashatu hide and the light is always good. You place the camera on a sandbag on a rotating platform and shoot. The hide can accommodate 8 photographers in one session. The best time of the year is between June – November, when the elephants are at the well every day. The water place attracts many animals; impala, kudu, baboon and many species of birds, but the real attraction are the elephants. These stars arrive silently and unexpectedly appear right in front of you. These huge thick-skinned animals tower high above you! while they splash and drink in the water just 3 meters away! They use their trunk to pour into their mouths up to 14 liters at a time. The first bit of water is always thrown back. They can drink up to 200 liters per day but can also go without water for four days They smell water at a distance of 5 kilometers. They stand and drink so close that a number of us were baptized by a smashing elephant. In the wet season, elephants gather in large groups, but in the dry season when water and food become scarcer, they split up into family groups. We saw these groups passing by all morning; One after another. You hear the rumble of the elephants as they communicate with each other Just as quietly as they had come, they disappear again. More than 200 elephants from so close to see is special and really one of the best experiences we had in Africa.
