Hunting Warthog in Mozambique

Posted on November 12, 2019 by Seth Koss

Welcome to RealTree Global Hunting. This week we’re in Mozambique, on the trail of Warthog in the thick African bush. The Warthog is a species of wild pig that inhabit
the grasslands, savanahs, and woodlands of Sub-Saharan Africa. The name Warthog comes from the four large warlike protrusions found on the head of the animals. These serve as fat reserves and are also used as defense when the males fight. The Afrikaners call them black varca meaning pig of the plains. The Warthogs in Mozambique are perfectly camouflaged in the thick brown bush and long grass. And are difficult to spot. We head out in the truck to cover as much ground as possible. And try and spot some Warthog activity. We’ve covered some ground and have been on the move for several hours before we spot something through the trees. The trackers assure me its a Warthog. But from here they aren’t easy to spot. I cant see it. We head off across the bush to get a closer look. There’s three Warthog grazing quietly ahead of us. We head in closer to find a position for a shot. Gavin sets up the sticks. And I get the Ruger Number 1 Tropical into a shooting position. But the Warthog have been spooked. And they head back into the trees. One of the Warthogs stands looking straight at us. And then a second, but theres a third Warthog whose still hiding behind the trees. I bide my time and wait for my opportunity. As he steps out into the open, broad side I’ve got a perfect shot. I fire and he takes off like a rocket. The shot is good and he wont have got far. On the replay you can see the four hundred grain hornady DGX dangerous game series round flying through the air hitting its skin and leaving a hole. Some incredible footage from my
dashingly handsome cameraman Dan. So we came up on a big boar. Actually we didn’t know it was a boar to start with. There was three piglets and there was another pig just behind the tree. So ordinarily in that situation its going to be a sow. But we waited and when it stood up it was a huge boar. So didn’t have much time to react. Just took the shot. But it looked pretty good he’s run of to the side but… I could see the blood was coming out of him. It was a good shot. So he’s just gone I heard him go down probably about thirty yards over to the right so we’re going to go in nice and steady. He’s got big tusks the last thing we want to do is go in there if he’s still moving. Gavin lead on. And I’ve got another one ready to go. We head out into the bush to look for our
quarry. Despite the perfect shot placement
he’s managed to to cover some ground. But its not long before we find a blood trail. There’s a lot of blood and its bright
red. So this is definitely a heart lung shot. And the blood here its not just dripping, its spraying all over the ground. So yeah hes hit in the right place. Then we find our Warthog down and out for the count. Okay he’s gone. Ah man. Goodness…. This is a big big… Holy cow! So its exactly where we wanted to place the shot. Uh… smack in. Just a third of the way up the body. Just behind the front leg. Absolutely textbook shot. He ran i’d say. I dunno forty-five yards Forty forty-five yards. But he was dead on its feet. What a magnificent pig Gavin! Kind of short in the face. GIven the size of it tusks but uh… Very very handsome pig. So he was just lying out there in the sun. I’m surprised actually. That given the conditions here, that they’d choose to stay here. Little bit further on a couple of hundred yards away there’s a lot deeper cover. As it happen Gavin we’ll need to roll him over. And uh… Lets just have a look at that exit wound uh… Oh yeah! So as you can see here, the exit wound is massive. So we have with these uh… Hornady DGX. the 400 dangerous game series rounds. They’ve been flying straight and true. Uh… every shots gone exactly where I’ve placed them. As you can see here, this is a big exit wound. So they mushroom perfectly they impart a lot of energy and this
animal literally forty-five yards, it was dead on its feet. But look at the size of this pig Gavin. These are some big tusks huh? Absolutely. So this is the sort of thing we’ve been looking for. We’ve been tracking this for days and days and days. And finally, great shot placement, beautiful trophy. And finally the hard work has paid off. Thank you very much brother. Now the hard work begins huh.
