Increase the extensibility of your D2L Learning
Environment by using External Learning Tools. This tutorial shows how to create an External
Learning Tools link in D2L Learning Environment. Learning Tools Interoperability (or LTI) is
a standard for passing user, course, and organization information between Tool Consumers such as
D2L Learning Environment) and Tool Providers (such as remote proctoring tools, wikis, and
publisher content). This information is passed between consumers
and providers by creating and using an LTI link.
D2L Learning Environment is LTI 1.1 compliant. LTI links in D2L Learning Environment are
created and managed through External Learning Tools. To access External Learning Tools,
click Admin Tools from the navbar. Select External Learning Tools. Here, you can manage external learning tool
links or manage tool providers. In this example, we will create a new link. Click New Link. Give the link a title. In this example, we
will use the name of the External Learning Tool. Enter the URL for the link. This is where
users will be sent when they click the link from within their courses. Enter a description, if desired. The description
is a place where you can explain to other users what the External Learning Tool is and
what its benefits are. The Key/Secret section is how External Learning
Tool links are made secure, similar to using a username and password. In the Signature
section, select Link key/secret to enter a key and a secret for the link. External Learning Tool links are customizable.
To customize your link, click Add custom parameters. In this example, we will customize the default
recording option. Enter the name for the parameter as outlined by the tool provider. Then, enter the value. In this example, because
we do not want to record meetings by default, we will enter false. Select the information you will send to the
tool provider in the Security Settings area. Tool providers should provide you with what
values need to be on or off. Furthermore, tool providers should inform you of the minimal
amount of data they require to have a successful and meaningful integration.
Links created at the organization level can be shared with all or a selection of courses.
To share the link, click Add Org Units. Select the org units you want to share the
link with… …And click Insert. When you are ready, click Save. The link displays in the list. To return to
the link, click its title. From here, you can preview the link. Click
the link’s context menu… …And click Preview. A preview displays. Return to the link by
returning to its window or tab. Increase the extensibility of your D2L Learning
Environment by using External Learning Tools.
