Welcome to 9 Media, and today we will be taking a look into Thor’s new love interest, a new heavenly weapon. Nonono, I spin it really fast, and it w- it w- It would pull me off the- Oh my God, the hammer pulled you off? The ground! It would pull me off the ground, up into the air, and I would fly. As we all know, Thor was forced to give his sweet farewells to Mjölnir during Thor: Ragnarok. It’s… not… possible… Mjölnir had been inseperable from the god of thunder through each phase of the MCU so far. But the destruction of Mjölnir actually made Ragnarok possible. This opened new doors for Thor to become a hero the universe truly needs him to be, but all the lightning in the world isn’t going to pose much of a threat against a villain such as Thanos. For this, Thor will need a weapon fit for a god back in his hands. And with the destruction of Thor’s mighty hammer stems an obvious question: What the heck is Thor wielding in this poster? To answer this riddle-question, we will need to sift through and analyze all of Thor’s comics, the Infinity War trailer, and even true origins of Mjölnir within Norse mythology. Sounds pretty damn exhausting, right? Well, luckily for you, we already did that part 😉 Originally, Mjölnir was a gift from the dwarves of Nidavellir, who used a space forge to craft the hammer. Although we can find many different stories, explaining how it actually acquired the power within it, they all agree on this one thing: it takes the immense energy and heat from a star to craft such a weapon as Mjölnir. And even for dwarves, it’s only been done once or twice in history. Keeping those details in mind, the more we actually learned about Mjölnir’s origins, the easier it became to piece together all of the clues foreshadowing Thor’s newly acquired weapon. After taking another look at the official Infinity War trailer, these specific scenes of Thor now give us significant meaning. If you can, at least for a second, look past Thor’s MCU-dominating biceps, you will notice Thor’s standing in some sort of forge, with beams of light and energy penetrating inwards. Although it’s a far cry from anything resembling a traditional forge, depicted in the comics, there are many similarities. Buuuut, do keep in mind, that it is backed with the deep, deep wallets of Marvel Studios, to give us the quality we’d expect in such a scene. As we look at what is more likely than not Thor, forging a new weapon we needed more supporting evidence. This brings us to Peter Dinklage. Casted for playing a secret role in Infinity War, naturally, stirred up plenty of speculation. With many citing that the actor would be the perfect person to bring the kind of gravitas and authority need for Eitri. (and if you haven’t heard of a dwarf named Eitri, he is specifically known to be one of the greatest blacksmiths amongst the dwarves.) Set photos of Peter’s new hairstyle for the Avengers show it dyed deep red, which seems to be the go-to color for dwarves nowadays, right? So why is Eitri’s appearance even necessary? Because there is only one plausible reason: For Thor to visit a space forge. On top of it all, the fact that Thor is the one apparently doing all the heavy lifting, may also explain the rarity of Mjölnir. If the heat and pressure of harnessing a star’s power can make even the god of biceps scream in agony, then it’s possible to speculate that no one since Odin himself successfully forged such a weapon as Mjölnir, which he then passed on to his son Thor when he deemed himself worthy. Now let’s take one more look at the official Infinity War concept art, which shows Thor grasping something. The main thing you probably notice is that the hilt of the weapon, is substantially longer than Mjölnir, which, after a little research, narrows it down to two likely candidates from Thor’s entire comic book history that show him wielding a weapon with a handle similar in length. Chris Hemsworth himself teased that Thor’s new weapon is from the comics, so fans of the hero who are up to speed on both the ultimate version of Thor and Thor: God of Thunder will know the frontrunners already. With Jason Aaron’s God of Thunder series diving into Thor’s history before Mjölnir, the battleaxe Jarnbjorn was added to the Marvel mythology. Sharp enough to cut through practically anything, and charmed to be indestructible, the weapon is as devastating in Thor’s hand as you might think. The other option is Thor’s signature weapon in Marvel’s Ultimate universe, as the name suggests, the Ultimate Mjölnir. With one side of the weapon’s head a hammer, and the other an axe, it’s twice as deadly. It’s also built with a piece of Asgard itself, which could be carried over to Infinity War, since Ragnarok left Asgard in what, a thousand tiny pieces? Unfortunately, we will have to wait for Avengers: Infinity War to see exactly what direction the MCU goes with, but we are stoked nonetheless. And let’s just say, if I were to be a guessing man, I would bet on Ultimate Mjölnir, since the comics show Thor using Jarnbjorn, well before he even proved himself worthy to hold Mjölnir. And if you are anything like us, we get pumped after watching any type of Thor-related content. So while you smash away at the keyboard like you are wielding Mjölnir in your right hand, and flexing Thor’s biceps with the left, let us know what you wanna see next. Winning suggestions will receive recognition somewhere throughout that specific video, and if you are still here, listening to me ramble on, 9 Media thanks you. Onnnnn to the next one. -murmering to self- Check.
