New programme on the channel! Don’t worry, the “idées reçues” videos [preconceived idea] will continue, it’s on top of them, of course, calm yourself… My dear fledglings, it is time for me to talk to you about my greatest love story. More than the dinosaurs… More than Egypt… More than “2001: A Space Odyssey”… More than Keane’s third album… The Amazon rainforest. Since I was a child, I’ve been dreaming of this jungle and of its amazing animals that inhabit it. And when I turned 15, after having read EVERY books on the subject, I was finally able to go there… I went to live in French Guiana. -which by the way, isn’t an island! Contrary to… to the preconceived idea! I…I CANNOT help myself. No, no. French Guiana is a region in the north-east of the Amazon where I lived and where my first pseudo-job was to take pictures of the wildlife. This is real PASSION, which kept me busy and is keeping me busy today still because I continue to take portraits of animals during my travels as much as as I can! So I have accumulated wheelbarrows of photos and as many stories to tell about my peregrinations. In this new programme, my photos will be the starting point of these episodes. HERE WE GO! The FIRST picture I decided to present to you is this one! It is a Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock.One of my favorite birds. that I managed to photograph in 2008 on the Kaw Mountain, in the heart of the Guiana Shield -which is the only part of the world where one can catch a Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock. *POKEMON!* This bird is mainly characterised by two things! The first one is its strong SEXUAL DIMORPHISM. It means that the male and the female don’t look anything alike. Like Donald Trump and his wife for exemple… One can see quite a sexual dimorphism… And the second thing is that the Guianian Cock-of-the-Rock is really not a common bird. It nests exclusively in caves in the forest. Those who have travelled there know that caves are like gold dust in the jungle. Gold too, as a matter of fact… But when I was living in Guiana, a rumour was spreading… Among naturalists, it was said that the Guianian Cock-of-the-Rocks were nesting in the Kaw Mountain… And an old wise man said to me: “You take the little path behind the mountain towards …” In short, I ended up finding this cave, hoping to see the beast! But I waited… waited… And it never came… *extract form a french song which uses this sentence* [Joe Dassin’s “Siffler sur la colline”] So I walked back again to the cave a second time and the same story: waited, never came… Zaï zaï Obviously, I did not go to INTO the cave which MUST NOT be done, or the birds could abandon the nest as a result Anyway the males do not parade in the cave. No.They have their “dance floor” outisde, which is called a “Lek”. it’s just an area of the forest where the trees are laid out just right and the males can spread their frills, each shapes and colours more beautiful than the next, to be as seductive as possible! Exactly like we do in nightclubs actually. Indeed, dance is our courtship ritual to us humans. The best moment to apprehend someone else’s body is when one dances. All these movements are made to emphasise the physical attributes. Well the Cock-of-the-Rocks are exactly the same! They will “shake their booty”! So it’s of course at this time that they are the most interesting to photograph. Anyway here I am, the Cock-of-the-Rocks were not showing up. You look at the forest, but you see nothing, it’s frustrating! And then you get the impression that every little orange or brown leaf is the bird! It was during the third expedition to this cave that I finally saw … The flash of orange light tearing the darkness of the undergrowth apart… I’m calm, and as I was about to aim … There was one right next to me. No need to panic, focus … CLAC! BIG. FAILURE! Aah…The bird is so uniformly orange that the autofocus got completely confused! It thought I was photographing the twig. At least, I have a super nice picture of twig! Here everyone can agree… I don’t panic, I switch to manual focus… … and the photo shoot was really out of time. Here are different shots that I was able to do near this lek. It was incredible to have these… these MYTHICAL animals so close, that looked right trough me! Aaah … This crest … These frills … They are at the top of the sexyness these birds. I think that they are every bit as good as the Southeast Asian’s Birds of Paradise. This is it for the Guianian Cock-of-the-Rock! There is another kind of Cock-of-the-Rock in the world, it’s the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock. I also took its picture in the Andes Mountains, On the other side of the Amazon. But that’s already another story. Thank you for watching! Don’t hesitate to subscribe, to join me on social networks… And most importantly if you liked this video and this format, do not hesitate to show it with a thumbs up! I’ve got loads of other pictures to show you: monkeys, snakes, insects… Who knows what we will find next time… See you, tweet tweet!
